There was a need for more information on the loss of kelp forests, so local Reef Check teams are training volunteer divers to help gather information. Science and diving go hand in hand to allow entire communities to come together and work on data-backed solutions for this urchin barren problem.⁠

@reefcheckmalaysia removed 100kg of ghost nets stuck on coral reefs off Sabah’s Mantanani Island!⁠
⁠
Do you know what ghost nets are? They are fishing nets, abandoned or thrown away at sea, left to throttle reefs, and entangle marine life.⁠
⁠
Luckily, surveying efforts from Reef Check Malaysia located the ghost nets, and the dive team removed the waste before more harm was inflicted on the reef and its inhabitants. ⁠
