There’s still one spot available for coral monitoring training in Indonesia!

This is a special opportunity to learn about the stunning reefs of the famous Coral Triangle with Reef Check training on Bangka Island, Indonesia, from September 12-20, 2026.

Reef Check Italia and Coral Eye are collaborating to bring volunteer divers from around the world to teach coral identification and disease monitoring. This effort will contribute to data collection and coral conservation in North Sulawesi.

Check out trip prerequisites and details at our 🔗

What would you do if an octopus reached out to touch your face?

Our volunteers were surveying Cape Foulweather in Depoe Bay at the end of June. As they finished up and prepared to reel in the transect line, this giant pacific octopus came out to say hello. Needless to say, our divers made a new friend that day.

This was a brand-new Reef Check site, and what an introduction this was! We’ll be tracking the health of this reef with support from @oregonkelp under @noaafisheries grant.

It’s impossible to achieve benchmarks like 30 years of reef monitoring without engaging youth. Scientific and conservation work rely on intergenerational collaboration to be at their most effective. The older generation may have more working knowledge and experience. But the younger generation brings new perspectives and a fearless approach.

This is why we do community outreach events and invest time/money into programs like Dive Into Science. It’s all about nurturing kids and young adults into active climate activists who are just as ready to jump in the water as they are to speak up in town halls.
