Let’s talk about Hawaiʻi.
Coral reefs protect coastlines from erosion by absorbing wave energy. As coral reefs deteriorate, coastal communities become more at risk of flooding. A report by the U.S. Geological Survey assessed the value of coral reefs for risk reduction. Here are just two of the key points from the report regarding Hawaiʻi:
💸Annually, reefs in Hawaiʻi avert $836 million in damages to property and economic activity.
🪸With a 1-meter loss in reef height, the 100-year floodplain would increase by 33 square kilometers, with $1.3 billion in damages to property and economic activity.
In addition to increasing temperature and ocean acidification, pollution from wastewater runoff and land erosion, overfishing, disease outbreaks, and invasive species are impacting Hawaiʻi’s amazing coral reefs.
Unfortunately in many cases, scientists and marine managers don’t have the data they need to protect these reefs until it is too late!
That’s why Reef Check is relaunching in Hawaiʻi. Through our globally standardized, long-term coral reef monitoring program, we collect necessary data for researchers, scientists, and fishery managers, to review, analyze, and make informed decisions to protect these reefs before it’s too late.
But we need your help to get this program off the ground.

I never thought I would ever scuba dive. I was fascinated by the ocean, but so afraid of the unknown.
Somehow a friend convinced me to try it and my life changed forever.
When I am diving I feel completely present in the moment… something I had not felt since I was a kid. The underwater world incites my curiosity. There is so much to explore! The more I dive, the more questions I have, and the more research I get to do!
I am a PADI Master Scuba Diver Instructor and first connected with Reef Check in Washington in 2022 as a volunteer in the Kelp Forest Monitoring Program. In 2023, I joined the scientific diving team, bringing my positive energy and enthusiasm to every ocean conservation effort I’ve supported.
Earlier this year, an opportunity arose for me to move to Hawaiʻi where I instruct, educate, and guide divers on our local reefs. I am passionate about saving the beautiful waters of Hawaiʻi and now I am helping to relaunch the Reef Check Hawaiʻi Program!
