We train and lead citizen scientist volunteers to survey the health of our local coral reefs. Reef Check provides researchers, government agencies, scientists, and non-governmental organizations with data for review, analysis, and ultimately to assist in informed decision making. Get ready to dive with purpose and check out our EcoDiver Page!
The Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the most remote, nearshore reef systems in the world. This leads to a large percentage of our marine organisms living only here. Sharks, rays, humpback whales and others can often be seen in our waters. If you are curious about the amazing marine critters here in Hawaii, check out our Marine Life Page.
Reef Check Hawaii Coordinator
Brad Giles
Brad will be the first to tell you he would never have thought he would go SCUBA diving. “I was fascinated by the ocean, but afraid of the unknown,” he says. However, a friend convinced him he should give it a try and his life changed forever!
“When diving I feel completely present in the moment, which is something I had not felt since I was a kid. The underwater world incites my curiosity and there is so much to explore! Because the more I dive, the more questions I have…and the more research I get to do!”
Brad first connected with Reef Check in Washington in 2022 volunteering in our Kelp Forest Monitoring Program. In 2023 he became a member of our scientific diving team. If you have met Brad, you know his positive energy and enthusiasm for people, the ocean, and Reef Check runs straight from the very core of his beliefs. After moving to Hawaii, his passion for the beautiful waters of Hawaii and Reef Check merged. Today he is helping to relaunch Reef Check Hawaii!
When not diving with Reef Check, Brad instructs, educates, and guides SCUBA divers on the Big Island of Hawaii, as a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer.
