30 Years of Reef Check!⁠

By the early 1990s, scientists suspected coral ecosystems were in serious trouble, but data didn’t exist.⁠
⁠
Enter Reef Check. ⁠
⁠
The mission was to create a methodology rigorous enough to satisfy scientists, yet simple enough that a recreational diver with no research background could execute it reliably on reefs anywhere in the world.⁠
⁠
2026 marks the 30th year of data collection for Reef Check’s coral reef monitoring program, representing one of the longest-running community-based coral reef monitoring efforts in the world. ⁠
