30 Years of Reef Check!
By the early 1990s, scientists suspected coral ecosystems were in serious trouble, but data didn’t exist.
Enter Reef Check.
The mission was to create a methodology rigorous enough to satisfy scientists, yet simple enough that a recreational diver with no research background could execute it reliably on reefs anywhere in the world.
2026 marks the 30th year of data collection for Reef Check’s coral reef monitoring program, representing one of the longest-running community-based coral reef monitoring efforts in the world.
We don’t plan on stopping anytime soon!

When you’re in the water as much as we are, you get to see a little bit of everything, which means we often get to witness magic.
But even the poor-visibility days are a blast because we know we’re doing our part to help the ocean and coastal communities.
You too can support this mission by donating or volunteering!
