Hawaii Marine Life
Hawaii… warm, clear, blue waters full of colorful reef fish, coral reefs, and varying substrate from rocky canyons to stretches of sand. Whether SCUBA diving, snorkeling, or tidepooling, Hawaii offers so much to see beneath the waves! The Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the most remote, nearshore reef systems in the world. This leads to a large percentage of our marine organisms living only here, also called “endemic” species. Sharks, rays, humpback whales and others can often be seen in our waters. When the islands first broke through the surface, fish and invertebrate larva, floating in ocean currents had a new place to try to sustain life. Some survived and over the years they adapted and evolved. Roughly one in every four fish species in Hawaii are endemic! View photos of Hawaii marine life!
