Survey season on the US West Coast may be winding down, but the science is just getting started. Our Winter Webinar Series is back, giving you a chance to see how your data, your dives, and your hours underwater are shaping real conservation outcomes across the West Coast.
From Puget Sound to Oregon to California, each session takes a closer look at the ecosystems you help monitor and the restoration work your efforts support. Whether you are curious about regional kelp communities, community-based urchin removal, Oregon’s restoration partnerships, or long-term trends in California fish assemblages, there is something for every ocean lover.
Winter Webinar Series Lineup:
January 13 | Kelp communities across Puget Sound basins
February 11 | Community based restoration in California
March 10 | Oregon kelp restoration and ORKA partnerships
April 7 | How the Marine Heat Wave reshaped California fish communities
Each talk runs from 6 to 7 pm PT and requires individual registration.
Join us, learn from the science you help generate, and stay connected through the winter months.

Oregon’s kelp forests got a major boost this year, and it is all thanks to you.
With help from ORKA, Reef Check divers, and our commercial and vessel partners, we removed more than 327,000 urchins from Macklyn Cove, Nellie’s Cove, and Kiwanda Rock. That is more than triple the target at some sites and a huge step toward giving bull kelp the breathing room it needs to return.
And it is already working.
In late summer our teams spotted new kelplings in both Macklyn Cove and Nellie’s Cove, a rare surprise outside the spring growing season and a clear sign that urchin pressure is dropping. Even better, our survey divers recorded a standing, mature kelp forest in Macklyn Cove this September. It is the first one seen there since 2020.
Spore bags, kelp platforms, and even transferred sunflower sea stars were part of this season’s restoration strategy. Some platforms grew kelp to full maturity and shed spores directly onto the seafloor. Sunflower stars were moved into areas where they can continue natural urchin control through winter. Every cleared patch and every spore release increases the odds of a healthier forest next spring.
This work is slow, methodical, and incredibly hard won, but this season showed what is possible when science, community, and effort align.
Thank you to every diver, every captain, every glove sacrificed. Oregon’s kelp forests are showing signs of recovery because you showed up.

To know this is happening, we need people like you!
Everything in the food chain is in balance until it’s not... Purple sea urchin populations can skyrocket in places with kelp when their natural predators, like sea otters and sunflower sea stars, disappear.
The only way we know about this happening is because divers report what they see underwater. Our Reef Check volunteers get trained as community scientists to collect valuable data about our reefs around the world.
