When you’re in the water as much as we are, you get to see a little bit of everything, which means we often get to witness magic.

But even the poor-visibility days are a blast because we know we’re doing our part to help the ocean and coastal communities.

You too can support this mission by donating or volunteering!

Let’s hear it for both our returning volunteers and brand-new Reef Check divers!

This month we got to teach and dive in the beautiful Mendocino County, California. Organisms were counted, and conditions were beautiful. Looking forward to another season of collecting valuable data from our nearshore reefs! Give a shout-out to our incredible divers in the comments.

We’re officially ready for some great surveying this season.

Reef Check Hong Kong data is helping provide guidance for new measures to protect some of its most popular natural areas. Sharp Island proposals include 156 acres of protected marine park and a reservation system for heavily visited sites.

The 2025 Reef Check surveys found coral cover ranging from 15.6% to an impressive 84.7%, with 12 sites recording more than 50% coral cover. The north and east sides of the island were found to have 77.5% and 52.2% coral cover, underscoring their ecological importance.

The surveys also documented localized bleaching at several sites and abandoned fishing gear at eight locations, which is exactly why Reef Check’s work is so important.

By training volunteer divers and maintaining long-term monitoring programs, Reef Check provides the data that scientists, managers, and policymakers rely on to make informed conservation decisions.

Hopeful climate news is important. Receive updates from our team by signing up for our email list.
