New publication!
During the 2014–2017 Global Bleaching Event:
• 51% of the world’s reefs experienced significant bleaching
• 15% suffered coral mortality
• Heat stress levels were higher and more widespread than any previous event
See more information on our latest press post at our 🔗
While the challenges are real, what happens next depends on how quickly we act and how well we understand what reefs are experiencing.
That’s where monitoring matters.
Long-term reef data helps scientists and managers:
• Track where reefs are declining and where they’re recovering
• Identify heat-tolerant and resilient coral communities
• Guide marine protections, restoration, and local management
• Measure what’s working so conservation efforts can scale
Much of our worldwide data collection comes from trained volunteer divers and community scientists. This means you can have an impact on this work too.
Support reef monitoring by donating or getting Reef Check certified this year!
