Opening Doors to Marine Science Careers: Reef Check’s Apprenticeship Approved!

Students in Dive into Science program enter the water

Earn while you learn, underwater.

Reef Check is excited to announce the launch of our new Marine Science Research Technician Registered Apprenticeship Program! Recently approved by the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards and building on our Dive into Science program, this new apprenticeship creates a paid, hands-on pathway into marine science and ocean conservation careers.

Over approximately two years, apprentices will complete 2,000 hours of on-the-job training alongside experienced marine scientists and conservation professionals. They’ll gain real-world experience in scientific diving, kelp forest monitoring, marine data collection, and kelp restoration while earning certifications in Advanced and Rescue Scuba, First Aid/CPR, Oxygen Provider, and Reef Check Kelp Forest Monitoring. Apprentices will earn wages throughout their training, with pay increasing as they master new skills.

Made possible through California’s Opportunity Youth Apprenticeship (COYA) Grant, the program is designed to open doors for young people who have historically faced barriers to marine science careers. Reef Check will provide the training, with West Los Angeles College serving as the program’s Local Education Agency.

For years, we’ve connected people to the ocean. Now we’re helping them build careers protecting it.

Stay tuned for application instructions!
