Meet Matthew Bullock, one of Reef Check’s dedicated Board Members!
Matthew holds a B.S. in Management Information Systems from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. His career is in technology consulting, including time with Deloitte Consulting and Toyota Financial Services. At Toyota, Matt led volunteer events and developed tech solutions benefiting youth-oriented nonprofits in Southern California.
Matt’s journey with Reef Check started in 2014, and since then, he has been a huge advocate for the Dive Into Science program. This initiative is especially close to his heart.
“Increasing all forms of diversity in ocean sciences generates more productive collaboration, bigger ideas, and better solutions to sustainably monitor, protect, and restore our threatened ocean ecosystems. The progress that Reef Check has made with establishing and growing this program over the last few years makes me extremely proud to be a board member.”
Beyond the boardroom, Matt is an avid surfer, mountain biker, and world traveler. However, one of his favorite ocean encounters happened right at home in Redondo Beach, where he shared a wave with a daring dolphin barreling toward him on a perfect wave—a memory he cherishes to this day.
“At the last second, maybe one body length away, the dolphin banked an incredible 180-degree underwater turn and jumped completely out of the water, flying away from me in the opposite direction. Of course, it had seen me the whole time, and it was having the time of its life with its friends, showing us who the REAL locals are in Redondo.”
His love for the outdoors and commitment to conservation are deeply rooted in his childhood summers spent in Finland, where he connected with nature in the simplest and most profound ways.

A stunning day for AAUS training 👇
Recently, our United States West Coast Reef Check team led an awesome AAUS (American Academy of Underwater Sciences) course featuring 8 dedicated divers from Washington, NorCal, Central Cal, and SoCal.
For those who don’t know, AAUS is a non-profit organization that sets and maintains high standards for scientific diving practices. Their mission is to advance and facilitate safe and productive scientific diving, ensuring that research conducted underwater meets rigorous safety and professional standards.
Check out the behind-the-scenes action of Dan and True setting up a “challenge course” for students to plan their scooter survey task, all with the magnificent backdrop of Big Creek, CA!
