Between survey dives, we get to see all kinds of cool critters on the reef.
This is a momma giant Pacific octopus protecting her eggs in Washington.
Notice the color of her body? When GPO moms are protecting and caring for their eggs, they never leave to feed. Their bodies survive on fat reserves until the eggs hatch, and they die soon after. In this process, they lose their bright, vibrant colors. Although it’s sad to think about her passing, her eggs will hatch, and a few of the thousands of eggs will survive to join the next generation of octopuses developing around the Puget Sound.

Save @reefcheck_baja by tripling your impact, now until September 1st!
Within three years, Reef Check Baja has connected people from the United States and Mexico in a collaborative effort to collect reef data in Baja California.
Unfortunately, funding recently disappeared, but we are determined to save this program.
Right now, your donation of any amount will be tripled by two of our board members, which means $5 becomes $15, $25 becomes $75, $200 becomes $600, and so on.
We need to keep long-term programs like reef surveying active and healthy to have accurate data. Donate what you can and share this with your networks.

There’s still one spot available for coral monitoring training in Indonesia!
This is a special opportunity to learn about the stunning reefs of the famous Coral Triangle with Reef Check training on Bangka Island, Indonesia, from September 12-20, 2026.
Reef Check Italia and Coral Eye are collaborating to bring volunteer divers from around the world to teach coral identification and disease monitoring. This effort will contribute to data collection and coral conservation in North Sulawesi.
