The 2026 American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) Symposium was an incredible opportunity for our Reef Check staff to connect with like-minded members of the marine biology community. The symposium was held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, providing space for collaborations, workshops, panels, and new technologies.
At Reef Check, our focus is community science and bringing recreational divers into scientific study. It was a treat to learn from so many talented people and to bring our mission to an even bigger scientific platform.
Thank you to everyone who joined this event, and a special thanks to @aaus.scientific.diving and @scripps_ocean for making it happen!

BOO!
Our Dive Into Science team of young scientific divers got spooky at Catalina Island. Although we are serious about their training as scuba divers and scientists, it’s important to make the work fun too👻
Have fun this weekend and be safe out there, divers!

Dive Into Science is our youth program that teaches ocean literacy and scuba diving skills while increasing diversity in the sciences. So far, we have worked with Foster and Transitional Age Youth in Los Angeles and Antelope Valley, and North Coast Tribes.
Our participants recently dove at Casino Point in Catalina to train transect line skills. This included maintaining neutral buoyancy along a line while noting the different types of substrates, algae, invertebrates, and fish present.
Donate to Reef Check to support this ongoing program, and stay tuned for updates!
