Dive Into Science is our youth program that teaches ocean literacy and scuba diving skills while increasing diversity in the sciences. So far, we have worked with Foster and Transitional Age Youth in Los Angeles and Antelope Valley, and North Coast Tribes.⁠
⁠
Our participants recently dove at Casino Point in Catalina to train transect line skills. This included maintaining neutral buoyancy along a line while noting the different types of substrates, algae, invertebrates, and fish present. ⁠

Big moves for big leggy bois! These sunflower stars went from the lab to the feast, and we can’t wait to see their permanent return to Monterey Bay, California. ⁠
⁠
This is a long-term collaborative project with @sunflowerstarlab ; @montereybayaquarium ; @mosslandingmarinelabs ; the California Department of Fish and Wildlife; California State University, Monterey Bay; @hopkinsmarinestation ; and the Monterey-based dive company, Underwater Company.⁠
⁠
There is more to study before this species can be fully reintroduced. Sea star wasting disease is still a concern, especially with warmer temperatures hitting California this year. Regardless, this is huge news, and we hope you’re as excited as we are.⁠

Proof that when communities come together, big things happen.⁠
