For our Oregon/PNW divers!

Due to changes in funding, we’re shifting gears and focusing exclusively on restoration work in 2025. That means restoration surveys and urchin culling using updated protocols.

To participate, you’ll need a quick crossover restoration training. We’ll be working one-on-one this fall and winter to help current Reef Check Kelp Forest Monitoring divers get trained up and ready to go.

Want to get involved sooner? We’ve got volunteer days coming up and culling events are headed to the calendar for August in Port Orford. If you’re interested in any July–September dates, you’ll need to complete your crossover before the end of July.

Already completed the RCKFR class or crossover this year? You’re good to go!

DM for more information or sign up for volunteer days via your Reef Check Volunteer Tool.

Coral reefs in crisis: The worst bleaching event ever recorded on Réunion Island has devastated local reefs in early 2025.

Compounded by Cyclone Garance in February, this bleaching event has left parts of the island’s fringing reefs severely damaged.

Since 2003, Reef Check Réunion, part of Reef Check France, has been monitoring over 35 sites annually, collecting citizen science data that feeds into a global coral reef health database. Their work proves that the data collected from trained citizen scientists make a huge impact in understanding local reef conditions.

Long-term monitoring shows a steady decline in hard coral cover over the past 30 years. Without swift action, this downward trend will only continue with climate change.

Reefs are resilient, but only if we act. We shared a full article about this with our email list. Stay up to date with the latest reef news by signing up at our 🔗

The ocean doesn’t need more talk. It needs more divers.

Our reefs are under pressure from every direction, including climate change, pollution, and overfishing.

But here’s the good news: You don’t need a bachelor’s degree to make a difference.

You just have to show up.

Reef Check trains everyday divers to become citizen scientists who monitor reef health, restore reefs, and help communities adapt to a changing ocean.

Whether you’re in a wetsuit pulling urchins in Oregon or surveying coral in the Maldives, you’re part of a global team fighting for the future of our reefs.

Want to get involved? Hit the link in bio to see how you can get involved through donations and/or volunteer efforts.
