SPOTTED! Pycnopodia Sunflower Star 👇
A team of Reef Check rockstars went tide-pooling at Mendocino Headlands in California and found this beautiful specimen! Thank you, Ian Norton, our Northern California Regional Manager, Lauren Nutt, one of our contract Divemasters, and Morgan Murphy-Cannella, our Director of Education, for documenting this find.
This individual has been spotted several times before and lives in this cave. We are happy to see it is alive, healthy, and growing! It’s now a whopping 11cm, and we see it as a symbol of resilience for the surrounding kelp forest.

Many of our team members are affected by the Southern California wildfires.
These fires, fueled by prolonged drought and erratic weather patterns linked to climate change, are a stark reminder of the urgent need for environmental action.
We will continue fighting climate change by restoring vital ecosystems like kelp forests and coral reefs, which absorb carbon and protect biodiversity. There is still time to make change.
