Our Executive Director, Jan Freiwald, was interviewed on an episode of Rising Tide, hosted by David Helvarg and Natasha Benjamin.⁠

In this episode, they discuss two major ocean ecosystems, coral reefs and kelp forests. They highlight the threats each faces as the ocean warms and the role El Niño could play in these fragile environments. ⁠

Jan also talks about how Reef Check is bringing young people into the ocean science world by making scuba diving more accessible. The Dive Into Science program provides training and mentorship to support their future as ocean advocates. ⁠

Recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot spoke at the Cal Academy, which included a segment on kelp forests!⁠

Politicians are speaking about this often-ignored, yet essential ecosystem, and we couldn’t be happier.⁠
⁠
Data collection, education, restoration, and sharing stories of reefs around the world are all part of the Reef Check mission. We’ve recorded and shared data on kelp decline for years, but it seems the message is finally reaching bigger audiences.⁠
