It’s the last day to make triple the impact for @reefcheck_baja ❗️

We’re fighting to keep this program up and running. A couple of our board members are helping us triple donations until September 1st. Reef Check Baja has connected divers in Baja and California to encourage collaboration in a world divided by arbitrary borders.

Want to see this program survive so we can continue collecting important reef data in Mexico? Donate any amount and see it make triple the impact. Use the link in our bio.

Urchin culling is part of the effort to reestablish kelp forests along the West Coast of the United States. In total for 2026, Reef Check volunteers completed 6,214 minutes of culling. In that time underwater, scuba divers culled 87,140 purple urchins and 5,147 red urchins.

This effort is bringing balance to the ecosystem once found in these waters, all while entertaining the local rockfish community. With more manageable numbers of urchins in the area, kelp will be able to thrive once again.

This work was supported by @oregonkelp under the @noaafisherieswestcoast grant.

Help us recover funding for @reefcheck_baja

We’re running a 3x donation campaign to cover the loss of funding for this incredibly important effort. That means whatever you donate will be tripled by board members proposing this campaign.

Reef Check Baja is a three-year-old binational effort designed to increase data collection capacity along the West Coast of North America. People from the United States and Mexico have come together since its inception to learn the techniques required to collect important long-term scientific data.
