Meet Annie Bauer-Civiello, Reef Check’s Director of the Restoration Program!
After moving to California at a young age, Annie pursued her passion for the ocean. She earned her Bachelor of Science in marine biology from UC Santa Cruz, where she also completed all her dive training. Annie’s path then led her to Australia for her Master of Science in marine biology and PhD in environmental science at James Cook University.
During her studies, Annie served as the Great Barrier Reef Survey Coordinator for Reef Check Australia, leading scientific dives, marine debris clean-ups, and outreach events.
After nearly a decade in Australia, Annie returned to California, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to our Restoration Program. For the upcoming season, she says she is particularly excited to visit the Big Sur restoration site.
“We had extremely promising results last fall. We saw an average density of kelp recruits of 61.7 per square meter!!! Yes- I said that right! I am excited and curious to see how the site looks after the winter.”
Last week, Annie conducted an informational webinar about how people can get involved with the Big Sur restoration project, and she hopes volunteer interest will continue to grow.
One of her favorite Reef Check memories is from a Big Sur survey dive:
“All of a sudden, the water got very, very, very dark. It was like someone turned off the lights. We looked up, and there was a school of anchovies so large that the only empty space was from our bubbles. The school hung out with us all dive. It was magical.”
When Annie isn’t diving, she enjoys crafting, from doodling and sewing to restoring furniture and exercising her artistic side outside the lab.

The Kelp Restoration internship offers a unique chance for local residents in the early stages of their careers to gain invaluable experience in marine science and conservation and forge meaningful connections within this field. Selected interns will collaborate with a diverse array of partners and local stakeholders actively involved in kelp forest restoration research in Mendocino, California.
Primary Responsibilities:
🌱Participate in restoration activities alongside leading kelp forest restoration experts, NGOs, scientists, government agencies, and commercial fisheries
📈Assist with subtidal long-term monitoring of restoration sites and data collection (for scuba-qualified individuals)
🗣️Contribute to publication and outreach activities
📝Support data entry and report writing tasks
🤿Option to become Reef Check Kelp Forest Monitoring certified, contingent upon diving experience
