There are parts of coral restoration that only divers can do, but saving our reefs is the job of every person on this planet. ⁠
⁠
We talk a lot about collecting data and conserving the health of reefs still alive around the globe, but restoration is where divers can jump in and build reefs that have been lost. These kinds of coral trees can be seen in tropical places all over the world, and when you travel as a diver, you may be able to get involved. ⁠
⁠
The science shows our oceans can’t handle the continued warming we are experiencing on this planet. That means, while our divers are out in the water doing damage control, the rest of us have the opportunity to speak up for the environment to change regulations and policies in support of conservation.⁠

Between survey dives, we get to see all kinds of cool critters on the reef.⁠
⁠
This is a momma giant Pacific octopus protecting her eggs in Washington. ⁠
⁠
Notice the color of her body? When GPO moms are protecting and caring for their eggs, they never leave to feed. Their bodies survive on fat reserves until the eggs hatch, and they die soon after. In this process, they lose their bright, vibrant colors. Although it’s sad to think about her passing, her eggs will hatch, and a few of the thousands of eggs will survive to join the next generation of octopuses developing around the Puget Sound.⁠
