Join the 2026 Coastal & Estuarine Summit from September 22-25, 2026. Our Executive Director, Jan Freiwald, will speak on the importance of kelp forest and eelgrass meadow restoration.⁠

These ecosystems are foundational to human wellbeing, yet their distribution and abundance have declined in the Northeast Pacific. ⁠
⁠
During this session, speakers will cover topics including restoring these important ecosystems and blending Indigenous knowledge with Western science techniques. ⁠

Reef Check’s role emphasizes the effectiveness of community-based networks and diverse partnerships in both data collection and science-backed restoration efforts to help kelp and eelgrass recover in coastal estuaries nationwide.⁠

All is not lost. But the time for passivity is long past. This is the message we hope everyone will take to heart and challenge the systems that brought us here.⁠

Scientists have been talking about the 1.5°C global warming limit for years, warning of catastrophic consequences if we didn’t make changes.⁠
⁠
We are experiencing the impacts of this warming now, but it doesn’t mean we can’t adapt. Climate solutions are available; we simply have to implement them. ⁠
⁠Each of us can become part of the solution by getting involved, whether it’s by donating, volunteering, speaking up and educating others, or advocating for environmental protection policies.⁠
