More Information:
Stretching over 1,000 miles, California’s coastline is the gateway to a unique and often under-appreciated marine ecosystem. Offshore, just below the surface, kelp forests and rocky reefs play home to a vast array of marine life supporting a diverse array of consumptive and non-consumptive human uses. Unfortunately, similar to reefs around the world, the rapid growth of California’s population, coastal development, pollution, and overfishing have placed increasing demands on our nearshore resources. Many organisms that were previously common in high numbers, like abalone, are now almost gone.
Reef Check California aims to build a network of informed and involved citizens who support the sustainable use and conservation of our nearshore marine resources. To accomplish this, volunteers will be trained to carry out surveys of nearshore reefs providing data on the status of key indicator species.
Using a relatively rapid survey, leveraged with man hours from volunteer teams, it will be possible to survey many sites each year. Not only will this help fill gaps in the State’s existing marine monitoring network, but will allow all ocean users to contribute their valuable knowledge to the management process.
By joining Reef Check, either as a volunteer or a general member, you’ll be contributing to the preservation and informed management of one of California’s most precious resources.

THAILAND: March – November 20
Snorkel and dive Thailand’s amazing coral reefs to conserve biodiversity. Thailand’s coral reefs are some of the most magnificent and diverse on Earth. Like many of the world’s reef systems, Thailand’s reefs are facing the pressures of overfishing and destructive fishing practices, like cyanide poisoning and explosives, as well as the threats posed by global warming and coral diseases. Reef Check, a non-profit organization, has been monitoring and surveying coral reefs around the world to provide baseline data to management organizations since 1996. Now, Dr. Georg Heiss and Kim Obermeyer, both of Reef Check, are joining forces with Earthwatch to do baseline assessments of Thailand’s resplendent coral reefs and to set up a long-term monitoring program. With this information, government agencies and local communities can effectively participate in managing and conserving these beautiful reefs and the biodiversity they support.

Big moves for big leggy bois! These sunflower stars went from the lab to the feast, and we can’t wait to see their permanent return to Monterey Bay, California.
This is a long-term collaborative project with @sunflowerstarlab ; @montereybayaquarium ; @mosslandingmarinelabs ; the California Department of Fish and Wildlife; California State University, Monterey Bay; @hopkinsmarinestation ; and the Monterey-based dive company, Underwater Company.
There is more to study before this species can be fully reintroduced. Sea star wasting disease is still a concern, especially with warmer temperatures hitting California this year. Regardless, this is huge news, and we hope you’re as excited as we are.
Proof that when communities come together, big things happen.
