Congrats to Tess, who won the @biosphereexpeditions competition and got Reef Check trained in the Maldives!

Here’s what she had to say about the experience: “Words cannot express my gratitude for being given the opportunity to come on this expedition. It exceeded expectations and has taught me so much. After this remarkable week, I’ve decided to pursue higher education in marine biology. There is no doubt that this is my passion. Thank you so much to Biosphere Expeditions and to Reef Check for this experience of a lifetime and the push I needed to follow my true passion.”

Welcome to the family. We can’t wait to see what you do in the future.

The latest reports on reefs reaching a global tipping point are difficult to hear. Across the planet, reefs are bleaching faster and recovering more slowly than ever before. But this isn’t the end of the story.

At Reef Check, we believe hope is something you create through action. For more than 20 years, our mission has been to empower local communities to document, protect, and restore ocean ecosystems.

Our volunteer divers collect the data that helps scientists and decision-makers understand what’s really happening beneath the surface.

Coral reefs have shown time and again that when given the right conditions, they can recover.

We’re not losing hope.

Join us by boycotting all non-essential purchases, donating to ocean conservation, and volunteering in your local community.

November is Coral Bleaching Awareness Month, a global call to action under the theme “Life Is Better in Color.”

And today more than ever, the news is urgent. New evidence shows that coral reefs have crossed a major climate tipping point, with 84% of reefs now exposed to lethal heat stress, and the systems we rely on are facing “uncharted territory.”

Why does it matter?

Coral reefs:
🪸 Support 25% of marine species. Hundreds of millions of people rely on reef ecosystems for food.
🪸 Coral reefs act as natural barriers for coastlines.
🪸 Reefs are estimated to contribute over $375 billion per year to the global economy through tourism, fisheries, and coastal protection.
🪸 Coral reefs are sometimes called the “medicine cabinets of the sea.” Organisms found in reefs have unique chemical compounds that have supported the development of treatments for cancer, arthritis, bacterial infections, and even viruses.
🪸 For many Indigenous and coastal communities, coral reefs hold deep cultural, spiritual, and historical significance.
🪸 Healthy coral reefs help support marine life that contributes to carbon cycling and sequestration in the ocean. When reefs degrade, the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon and stabilize the climate is compromised. If reefs disappear, we’ll see a massive uptick in consequences on land.

This month, we ask you to:
🔹 Desaturate your logo or photo (join the visual movement)
🔹 Boycott all unnecessary purchases
🔹 Share with #LifeIsBetterInColor #HopeForCoral #ForCoral
🔹 Visit the coral bleaching link in our bio for tools and steps you can take

Ocean ecosystems and entire communities depend on clear actions to reverse warming, cut pollution, and safeguard reef resilience.
