Ocean Festival and Movie at the Bluffs:  “Surf’s Up!”

At the Ocean Festival Reef Check Foundation will host a number of family oriented games and activities, including “touch tanks” and other fun activities which teach children and families how to be better custodians of our ocean and reef ecosystems.  The United States Coast Guard, the County Fire and Sheriff Departments and the County Lifeguards will participate and various nonprofit organizations dedicated to ocean conservation and education have been invited to present educational booths.  The international entertainment will include dance and other performances from Indonesia, Thailand, Hawaii, Tahiti and Brazil.  Teens from the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu, the YMCA and other children’s organizations will be invited to participate, and Reef Check Foundation will donate “Reef Adventures” books to kids.  T-shirts as well as “fun food” will be available for purchase. The “International Declaration of Reef Rights”, which has to date been signed by over 4,000 individuals in over 90 countries worldwide will be read and signed by festival participants and dignitaries.

At nightfall the Sony Pictures Animation film “Surf’s Up!” will be screened.  Co-sponsored by Good Magazine, the movie will be hosted by the City of Malibu, its Mayor and City Council as well as by local service groups. The movie screening will be geared toward children and families, and will conclude with a “call to action” to protect the coral reefs of the world and our own rocky reefs along the California coastline.

Sponsorships for every aspect of the Reef Check International Ocean Festival (September 23) and Reef Rescue 2007 Dinner and Reef Inhabitants performance (September 16) are available:

Founded in 1997, Reef Check Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization which was established to reverse the coral reef crisis by using a business model to self-finance ocean conservation on a global scale.  Reef Check programs provide ecologically sound and economically sustainable solutions for local businesses and communities, and thousands of volunteers participate in its programs in over 80 countries.  Reef Check provides solutions through the EcoAction, EcoExpeditions and Coral Reef Management programs and through Roving Research Teams of scientists who study coral reef health at remote locations worldwide.  Reef Check California was launched last year to help conserve rocky reef life in our own state.
