This disaster is similar with Nias earth quake with 2 meter height tsunami in March 28, 2005. The coastline uplifted 2-3.5 meters.
Exposed corals dried and died, damage corals found iuntil 5 meters depth, commonly branched corals. Some porites and tabulate overturned. Rubble along the shoreline.
In seawters that deeper tahn 5 meters depth, no significant damage. Probably, the damage deeper than 5 meters just caused by the earthquake. If the coral deeper than 5 meters depth was good in the area, predicted that there will be no significant damage but the overturned coral.
Fishes were gone, I conclude this after North Sumatera Reef Check post Tsunami and earthquake in Nias. The locals said that there was a lot of coral fishes in the area, but at the survey, we saw a little. Just have no idea, where the fish gone? by the way we found a lot of died pencil urchin at the exposed coral Comment by Ivan K.K. Silaban ; 2007-05-26 16:18:17 |
