  Elements
Element One: A Kids’ Day in Paradise.
Expected attendance: 300.

We will host a number of family oriented games and activities throughout the day on the beach fronting Paradise Cove, with participation of the United States Coast Guard, the County Fire and Sheriff Departments and the County Lifeguards. These games will include reef monitoring demonstrations, outrigger canoe, boogie board and swim races, surf demonstrations, and surf exhibitions. Various vendors will present educational booths, and a movie screening will show at nightfall to entertain the children during the VIP dinner and show. We will also present international entertainment from Indonesia, Hawaii, Polynesia, Jamaica, Mexico, Japan, Korea and other countries where Reef Check has a presence. The event is structured to allow parents with small or teen-aged children to enjoy the festival while their kids continue to participate in fun and safe educational activities. Children will be supervised by teens from the Boys& Girls Club of Malibu. Reef Check Foundation will donate “Reef Adventures” books to kids, who will enjoy a healthy snack as well as a “fun food” dinner provided by Bob Morris’ Paradise Cove Beach Café. It is proposed that the evening film screening (title to be announced June 7, 2007) will be hosted by the City of Malibu, its Mayor and City Council and will be co-hosted by local service groups.

Element Two: VIP Dinner, Awards Presentation and Reef Inhabitants Show.
Expected Attendance: 300-350.

The Reef Check Foundation VIP Dinner and Show will begin at sunset on the pier.
Tables for this event will be sold at a premium price to support the international and local work of Reef Check. VIP guests will arrive to a red carpet entry featuring a Silent Auction with a limited number of high-end travel and ocean-related items. Cocktail hour will feature island music, and will be followed by a seated VIP dinner.

The Poseidon Award will be presented to internationally renowned marine biologist and current “explorer-in-residence” at National Geographic Dr. Sylvia Earle. Dr. Earle was named Time Magazine’s first “hero for the planet”, and has pioneered research on marine ecosystems through more than 50 expeditions totaling over 6000 hours underwater. The Mermaid of the Reef Award will be awarded to Malibu’s Daryl Hannah, and the newly created California Reef Rescue Award will be presented to Bob Morris and invited honoree Jeff Bridges, both for their contributions as custodians of the local California coastal environment.

Guests will view the West Cost Premiere of “Reef Inhabitants”, a stunning extravaganza of dance, music and multi-media art to raise awareness about the crisis affecting our oceans and coral reefs. The live show features performances by the Celine Dion dancers and cellist Marc Langis, with musical score and video by Paolo Santos and choreography by Caroline Sicard.

After the VIP show and dinner the entertainment on the main stage will begin. Co-sponsored by Good Magazine, the concert will be held on a stage erected on the parking lot adjacent to the beach, and will be geared toward older teens and adults. Various bands with Reef Check ties will be invited to participate, and the goal is to secure the participation of a stellar act as the show’s star attraction. A Reef Check survey site at Paradise Cove will be dedicated to Eddy Medora in memoriam and to be surveyed in perpetuity in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to Reef Check Foundation. Tickets can be purchased separately for this portion of the event, and food and drink will be made available for purchase through Bob Morris’ Paradise Cove Beach Café.
