We chose substrate categories so that we could answer specific questions about impacts on reef health. For example, by recording all coral killed within the last year (Recently Killed Coral (RKC)) and by recording all hard coral, we can determine what percentage of hard coral has died in the last year and track these numbers from year to year in order to detect changes on the reef that are significant to resource managers.
